Linked Accounts | Account

Linked Accounts

>What is a linked account?
A linked account is an approved online account that you link to your Facebook account. This means that when you log in to the linked account, you will be able to access your Facebook account without logging in to Facebook.

>What types of accounts can I link to my Facebook account?
You can link your Facebook account to a variety of other online accounts, including accounts with Google and Yahoo!. To see a full list, click on the drop-down menu in the "Linked Accounts" section of your Account Settings.

>How do I add or remove a linked account?
To add or remove a linked account, navigate to "Linked Accounts" section of your Account Settings page. Click "change" to see a list of all of the accounts that are currently linked to your Facebook account.

To link a new account, select an account type from the drop-down menu and click "Link New Account." Enter your Facebook password in the box that appears and click "confirm." Another box will appear asking you to sign into the account you wish to link (for example, your Gmail account).

To remove a linked account, simply click the "remove" button located next to the account.

>Why would I link my other online accounts to my Facebook account?
Linking another online account, such as a Gmail account, to your Facebook account allows you to access Facebook whenever you are logged in to that other account. Thus logging into your Gmail account would also log you in to your Facebook account.

>I received an email from Facebook saying "Facebook Account Linked With..." and I didn’t take this action
If you feel you have received this email in error, it is possible that someone is trying to gain access to your account without your permission. Follow the steps provided in the email to secure your account.

Please adhere to the following guidelines to help ensure the security of your account in the future.
  1. Password Protection: You should select a unique and complex password for your account and keep this entirely to yourself. Be sure that you use a complex string of numbers, letters, and punctuation marks that is at least six characters in length. It should also be different from other passwords you use elsewhere on the internet.
  2. Private Browsing: Please make sure that you log out of your Facebook account and quit your browser when you’re done using the site. This is especially important when using a public computer or someone else's mobile device. You should also never check the "Keep me logged in" box when logging in from a public computer, as this will keep you logged in even after you close your browser window.
  3. Secure Email: Since anyone who can read your email can probably also access your Facebook account, you should make sure that any email addresses associated with your account are secure. To ensure security, you should change the password for all of your email accounts and make sure that no two are the same. By varying your passwords, you can greatly decrease your account’s risk of being compromised in the future.
  4. Security Question: If you have not done so already, you should add a security question to your account from the Account Settings page. You should choose a question and answer that you will remember, and no one else should be able to answer the question that you choose.
  5. Log in at Facebook.com: Make sure that when you access the site, you always log in from a legitimate Facebook page with the facebook.com domain. Do not click any unfamiliar links and do not run any executable files (files ending in .exe) on your computer without knowing what they are. If something looks or feels suspicious, go directly to www.facebook.com to log in.
  6. Run Anti-Virus Software: If your computer has been infected with a virus or with malware, you will need to run anti-virus software to remove these harmful programs and keep your information secure.

Language-specific Names | Facebook

Language-specific Names

>What is a language-specific name?
A language-specific name is your name, as it appears in another language. This way, your friends can see your name in a language they understand.

Here are examples of language-specific names:
  • Hanako Yamada / 山田花子
  • Chen WeiJie / 陳偉傑
  • Young Hee Kim / 김영희
  • Marina Petrova / Марина Петрова
When you add a language-specific name to your timeline, your friends will see your name in the way that's most natural for them. So if they use Facebook in the same language as your language-specific name (example on the right), that's what they'll see. Everyone else will see the name you signed up with (example on the left).

Right now language-specific names are only available in a few countries. We hope to expand to more places in the future.

>How is a language-specific name different from an alternate name?
A language-specific name is:
  • Your real, full name, as it appears in a different language
  • Shown in place of the name you signed up with throughout the site (on your timeline, in search results, posts, comments and photo tags)
  • Only visible to people using Facebook in that language
An alternatate name is:
  • A different version of your name, like your nickname or maiden name
  • Displayed in parenthesis next to your name, but only on your timeline and in search results
  • Visible to anyone who views your timeline or search results

>How do I add, edit or delete my language-specific name?
If you're using Facebook in another language, you may have the option to add a language-specific name to your account.
To add or edit your language-specific name:
  1. Click at the top-right corner of Facebook and select Account Settings
  2. Click General in the left-hand column and click on the Name setting
  3. Enter your name as it appears in another language in the language-specific name fields
  4. Click Save Changes
Note: You'll only see the option to add a language-specific name if you have that language listed on your account. You can add a language to your timeline by following these directions.

>I'm trying to change my language-specific name but my request wasn't approved.
This might be because the name you requested doesn't follow our name standards. If you've read our name policies and think that your name was rejected by mistake, let us know.

>Why is the name listed on my timeline different from the name I signed up with?
If you entered a language-specific name in addition to your registered name, then your language-specific name will display for people who use Facebook in that language.
Here are examples of language-specific names:
  • Hanako Yamada / 山田花子
  • Chen WeiJie / 陳偉傑
  • Young Hee Kim / 김영희
  • Marina Petrova / Марина Петрова

Note: If you checked the box to have your alternate name listed on your timeline, it'll appear next to your name at the top of your personal timeline page. If you have a large number of followers, you may be prompted to verify your account when you add an alternate name to your timeline.

If you checked the box to display your alternate name on your timeline, it will appear in parentheses next to your full name at the top of your timeline. People will also see your alternate name if they search for you or when you send friend requests.
If you have a large number of public subscribers, you may have the option to verify your account and display your alternate name on the top of your timeline, with your real name in the About section.

What is the minimum password strength? How can I make my password strong?

When creating a new password, be sure that it is at least 6 characters in length and that you use a complex string of numbers, letters, and punctuation marks. If the password you entered is not strong enough, you may want to try mixing uppercase and lowercase letters or making your password longer.

Ideally, the password you select should be easy for you to remember but hard for someone else to figure out. For added security, your Facebook password should also be different than other passwords that you use on the internet.
